There were skateboarding competitions in California in the 1960's ABC Wide World of Sports did a broadcast of those competitions. Until the late 1960's when concerned parents put a stop to kids skateboarding. However fewer kids did skateboarding in the 1970's mostly in California since the ocean tides are down during the days when they can't surf. Then the introduction of urethane wheels make skateboarding smoother and more kids buying skateboards. Then skateboarding tournaments came back. Skip and Jeff Ho's Z Boys team were dominant in the competition especially with Jay Adams and Tony Alva.

Clever premise: I like how the director, Claude Jutra, dedicates the film to "victims of intolerance"! Speaking of the director, Jutra went on to be a highly-regarded film maker who was at one point called the "grandfather of Quebec cinema." However, in 2016, 30 years after his death at the age of 56, it was alleged that he had been a pederast and that people in the film industry had known about and tolerated the behavior. Based on the allegations - but apparently no inquiry - Jutra's name was promptly erased from Quebec cinematic history. It's not always easy to separate art from the bad acts of its creators, but I have to say that Jutra's 1971 feature, "Mon oncle Antoine," is one of my favorite films.
